US President Donald Trump told reporters at a White House lunch that Mexico should fight criminal groups but lacks the capacity to do so. He said he had told Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum directly.

"Unfortunately, the cartels control Mexico. I told the president of Mexico. She's not happy."

Drop in drug flows by sea, according to Trump

97 %

Trump said drug flows by sea have fallen 97 per cent since his strikes on suspected drug boats began. On land, he said, the United States has not launched an all-out attack and works with Sheinbaum's government.

Background

In late September, at the UN General Assembly, Trump called Mexico the epicentre of cartel violence. Since January 2025 his administration has labelled the cartels foreign terrorist organizations.
