US moves to let specialty pharmacies make some peptides
The process at issue
Compounding
The plan, backed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., would let pharmacies temporarily compound popular peptides such as BPC-157, two people familiar with it said. Compounding means mixing a drug from scratch instead of selling a manufacturer's product.
The FDA had put BPC-157 and more than a dozen other injectable peptides on its list of substances too risky to compound. It cited contamination, allergic reactions and tumour growth.
And us?
Peptides are regulated as pharmaceuticals in Canada. In April, Health Canada warned that unauthorized peptide products are illegal and have not been assessed for safety.
"All of these popular ones outside of GLP-1s, there's just no good evidence to support them. So people should be cautious, almost full stop."
