Shooting at an Oregon elementary school kills three children and a teacher

A 16-year-old former student attacked a special-needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, police said. Children aged five, eight and 11 were killed, along with teacher Meghan Lambert, 25.

A teacher threw her phone at the gunman and tackled him, then a 36-year-old father, Kaylub Giamanco, followed him inside and shot him dead. Police Chief Mike Krantz said both saved lives.

Rounds fired in the classroom

15 rounds

Police said the attacker shot through locked doors with a 12-gauge shotgun, firing as many as 15 rounds, and had about 44 left.

A seven-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital. Police are still trying to determine how the attacker obtained the gun, and the motive is not clear.
