UN climate panel fails to agree on when to publish its next major report

Addis Ababa

Ethiopia

The 65th plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ended in Addis Ababa without a deal on the timetable for its seventh assessment report. The panel says the session will resume as soon as possible.

Proposed by scientists

End of 2028

India, Saudi Arabia, China

2029

The working group co-chairs proposed finishing the report by the end of 2028, in time for the COP33 climate talks. India, Saudi Arabia and China prefer 2029, citing the time needed to include new data and work by researchers from developing countries.

It is unacceptable that a handful of countries continue to delay the publication of IPCC reports, the science we need at home to help save lives and livelihoods.

Canada was among 35 countries, with Chile, France, Mexico, Sierra Leone and Vanuatu, that signed an Oct 9 declaration backing publication in 2028.
