Millions of Ukrainians who returned home risk being displaced again this winter, UN agency warns
What is pushing families out
- Damaged homes
- Attacks on energy infrastructure
- Unaffordable heating
Damaged homes, repeated attacks on energy infrastructure and unaffordable heating are pushing many families to consider leaving again, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Friday.
Still displaced
3.6 million
Returned home
3.8 million
About 3.6 million people remain displaced inside Ukraine, while about 3.8 million have returned home since February 2022. Some 1.45 million of those who returned live near the front line.
Households able to heat their homes last winter
32 %
Last winter, only 32 per cent of households said they could heat their homes properly, and one in four near the front line. Some 2.1 million older people live alone in apartment buildings.
What's next
The IOM's response plan for Ukraine is less than 7 per cent funded, and the agency is calling for urgent support to repair homes before winter.
