Pope Leo's health should not be taken for granted, top Vatican diplomat says
The diagnosis
lung adenocarcinoma
Pope Leo XIV, 71, was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after surgery on Tuesday at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican said the operation was successful.
"I think we were maybe taking him a little bit for granted."
— Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican foreign minister
What's next
The Vatican says the Pope is improving steadily and was expected to lead Sunday prayers. No discharge date has been given, and recovery was expected to take about a week.
Gallagher said he expects the Pope to visit the United Kingdom at some point, and that Leo is just beginning to think about his plans for 2027.
