A pink diamond stolen in 1926 goes back on display in France

The Grand Condé, a pink diamond

9 carats

The nine-carat, pear-shaped Grand Condé was stolen in an overnight raid on the Château de Chantilly in October 1926 and hidden in a hollowed-out apple.

It was recovered a few weeks later, when a hungry maid at the thieves' hotel bit into the apple.

The diamond is on show at the Condé Museum until Jan 3, 2027, with research that makes the stone uniquely identifiable and archive material on its theft.

Background

The gem is one of few royal jewels to survive the French Revolution; it first appears in a 1740 inventory of Louis Henri de Bourbon, Prince of Condé.
