Rights groups' tally

More than 25,000

Homeland Security data counts more than 16,000 deportations to third countries from January 2025 to August 2026. Refugees International and Human Rights First put the total above 25,000.

Removal to a country other than one's own

third-country deportation

A third-country deportation sends someone to a country that is not their own, often when they say they would face danger at home.

Countries that agreed to take deportees

  • El Salvador
  • Eswatini
  • Liberia, up to 1,200 people
  • Cameroon

El Salvador and Eswatini hold deportees in prisons, and the US offers aid or visa concessions to others, such as US$124 million for Liberia's health services.

Why it matters

UN experts say the practice causes a "cascade of human rights violations". Some US courts called it illegal, but the Supreme Court let it continue in a September ruling.
