The former president of Senegal announced his withdrawal on Oct 17, a day after the Security Council's sixth informal vote failed to settle on a candidate.

“I took this decision with a deep sense of responsibility, hoping to contribute to the emergence of a consensus candidate within the Security Council,” Sall said.

Sall said the informal votes point to a preference for a candidate from Latin America and the Caribbean, possibly a woman.
