Search for Amelia Earhart's plane resumes after storms

A team is searching Nikumaroro, an uninhabited atoll in Kiribati, for the Taraia Object, a shape in its lagoon seen in aerial images.

Rough seas and strong winds kept the researchers on their ship for three days, until the weather cleared on Oct 18.

Background

Earhart vanished in 1937 with navigator Fred Noonan while trying to reach Howland Island, near Nikumaroro, on a flight around the world.

Purdue University says the object, visible in photos from 1938, could be a small aircraft, while skeptics think it may be a fallen tree.
