Cabrera de Mar

Catalonia, Spain

A woman who fell into a stream on Saturday in Cabrera de Mar, about 25 km northeast of Barcelona, was found dead at sea, Catalan firefighters said.

Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, issued its highest red alert for Majorca and the Valencia region, where the country's deadliest floods in a generation struck in 2024.

Disruptions

  • Schools closed on Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera
  • Local trains suspended in Valencia
  • Main road to Ibiza airport closed
  • At least five flights cancelled, 16 diverted

Schools closed on three Balearic islands, local trains stopped in Valencia and the main road to Ibiza's airport was shut, while the army sent an emergency unit to Ibiza and Majorca.

Background

Scientists say climate change is intensifying the autumn storms in eastern Spain, which just had its hottest September since records began in 1961.
