In Abyei, drones hit a market on Monday and killed 73 people, the region's information minister said. A military source said the army carried out the attack, calling the market a fuel supply site for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

South Sudan, which jointly administers Abyei with Sudan and also claims it, summoned Sudan's ambassador to lodge a formal protest.

We are alarmed by the continued deadly drone strikes across the country that are killing civilians, including children, and that are disrupting essential services.

— Stéphane Dujarric, UN spokesperson

Background

The war between the army and the RSF began in April 2023 and has killed at least 59,000 people, according to the conflict monitor ACLED.
