The collapse of an informal gold mine in southwestern Colombia killed 14 people and injured seven others, local authorities said on Monday.

A disaster response official, Jorge Tovar Castillo, said 12 to 15 more miners were reported missing. Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar said search and rescue operations had concluded.

The mine is in Santa Barbara de Iscuande, in the department of Nariño, a municipality surrounded by dense rainforest that can only be reached by boat or small aircraft.

Background

Hundreds of small mines in Colombia operate without government permits, and in August, 13 people died in a similar accident in Policarpa, also in Nariño.
