Only 31 per cent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump's performance, the lowest figure of his two terms, a new poll of 1,679 adults found. Two weeks earlier it stood at 32 per cent.

Asked how they would vote if the midterms were held today, 47 per cent chose the Democrats and 35 per cent the Republicans, a 12-point lead.

Disapproval has grown since the US-Israel war on Iran began on Feb 28 and pushed up petrol and diesel prices.

The midterms on Nov 3 put all 435 House seats and 33 of the 100 Senate seats to a vote. Republicans hold the House 218-214 and the Senate 53-47.
