Mohammed, accused of masterminding the Sept 11, 2001, attacks, now faces a military trial at Guantanamo Bay set to begin on Jun 5, 2028.

Two days after the deal was reached in July 2024, then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rescinded it, and an appeals court later upheld his decision.

Background

He is charged with 2,977 counts of murder, and his case has stalled for years over evidence obtained during CIA interrogations. In August, a military judge threw out statements he made in 2007.
