UN says the world is heading for 2.6°C of warming this century

Projected warming by 2100

2.6 °C

Even if countries keep their pledges, global temperatures would be 2.6°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, the UN Environment Programme's annual emissions gap report says. That is worse than last year's 2.3°C to 2.5°C, partly because the United States left the Paris Agreement.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the world is "dangerously off track" and "can no longer avoid exceeding" the 1.5°C limit, the Paris Agreement's most ambitious goal.

Cuts needed from 2025 levels

  • 18% by 2030
  • 45% by 2035
  • 69% by 2040

For warming to peak at 1.7°C to 1.8°C and fall back below 1.5°C by 2100, global emissions would have to drop 18 per cent by 2030, 45 per cent by 2035 and 69 per cent by 2040 from 2025 levels.
