Trump creates a women's health division at the NIH and a White House task force

Days to set up the new NIH division

90 days

Trump signed an executive order on Monday creating a Women's Health Division at the National Institutes of Health, to be set up within 90 days. It will not replace the NIH's Office of Research on Women's Health but will have a broader mandate.

"This is a transformative moment for women in America. Beginning today, we will change the reality of women's health."

— Melania Trump, who leads the initiative

The task force will be co-chaired by White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The order sets no funding targets or dollar amounts.

Background

Critics question the order after deep cuts at the NIH, where thousands of employees have been laid off. The agency was given a deadline to cut spending by 35 per cent, a US$2.6-billion reduction.
