Scientists reconstruct what Denisovans looked like

Protein analysis confirmed that 20 fossils from Xujiayao, China, between 138,000 and 199,000 years old, are Denisovan. Together with a skull from Harbin, they give researchers a first detailed picture of the face.

Denisovan features

  • Low, long skull
  • Massive brow ridge
  • Flat cheekbones
  • Slightly protruding jaw

The study describes a low skull, a massive brow ridge, flat cheekbones and a slightly protruding jaw.

Outside experts say more samples are needed, and any portrait involves artistic interpretation.
