Dozens of officers moved in shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, baton-charging demonstrators in Rossio Square. A smaller camp in Porto was also dismantled, with six arrests.

60 hurt
Police called the operation "proportionate" and reported seven minor injuries. The activist group Casa para Viver says 60 people were hurt.
Why it matters
Home prices in Portugal have more than doubled since 2017, and the Bank of Portugal estimates a shortfall of 300,000 homes. Protesters want a bill making evictions easier scrapped and rent caps on new leases ended.
