Menopause may help explain why more women than men get dementia

Women among Canadians with dementia, 2020

62 %

Women made up an estimated 62 per cent of Canadians living with dementia in 2020, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

A Sunnybrook Research Institute study in Nature Medicine tested the blood of 80 women aged 43 to 58. Postmenopausal women showed higher levels of inflammation.

"All women who live long enough go through menopause, and not all women develop Alzheimer's disease."
