Lula wins Brazil's run-off, holding off the far right

Lula won more than 51 per cent of the vote to Flavio Bolsonaro's 48 per cent, with 98.76 per cent of ballots counted when the result was called.

No candidate in modern Brazilian history had lost the first round, then won the run-off. At 80, Lula takes a fourth non-consecutive term.

What's next

Bolsonaro has pledged to annul the vote, blaming the two-hour extension of voting. Lula will be sworn in on Jan 5, 2027.
