A Nanotyrannus skeleton goes to auction in New York

Expected price at auction

6 to 9 million US$

The skeleton, nicknamed "Jodi", was due to be auctioned by Sotheby's in New York on Tuesday, with an expected price of US$6 million to US$9 million.

What is Nanotyrannus?

Nanotyrannus

Nanotyrannus is a Late Cretaceous carnivore once mistaken for a young Tyrannosaurus rex; it is smaller and slimmer, with blade-like teeth, and lived alongside T. rex about 67 million years ago.

Sotheby's says it is one of only three such skeletons known and the first to come to market since US researchers confirmed a year ago that Nanotyrannus is its own genus. The mounted skeleton stands about three metres tall.

"It's harrowing to think it could disappear into the vaults of a collector."
