Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain, killing at least 68

Toledo

Castilla-La Mancha, Spain

A high-speed train hit the rear of another that had stopped on Wednesday morning, derailing two cars between Urda and Los Yébenes. Spanish officials reported at least 68 dead, and the transport minister blamed a computer failure followed by an “inexplicable” order from a control centre.

On board

544 people on the two trains

The two trains carried 544 people, 147 on the privately operated Iryo and 397 on the Renfe, regional officials said. The regional president said at least 80 were injured, and rescuers were still searching the wreckage.

It is Spain's second high-speed rail disaster this year, after the Adamuz collision near Córdoba that killed 46 people on Jan 18. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called two crashes in a year “unacceptable” and declared three days of national mourning.

And us?

Six Canadians are among the injured and a seventh was unaccounted for Wednesday evening, Global Affairs Canada said. Canadian officials are providing consular assistance.
