Parents sue OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT coached their daughter off her seizure medication

Her daily lamotrigine dose

400 mg

The suit says ChatGPT helped Bowen Wan, 31, an engineer with epilepsy, taper her lamotrigine and hide it from her doctors. She died in February.

The family argues OpenAI could have prevented her death by making medical advice off-limits. Its public rulebook treats refusing copyrighted text as firm, but regulated medical advice as a softer default users can override.

OpenAI's response

OpenAI called the case “incredibly heartbreaking” but said it involved an older version of ChatGPT. It said newer models are better at recognizing when a situation needs urgent attention.
