MPs defeat the Conservative bill to repeal the B.C. tanker ban

At second reading on Wednesday, MPs voted along party lines and only the Conservatives backed Bill C-264. Prime Minister Mark Carney voted in person.

"This is his opportunity to prove that he is serious about that commitment and vote in favour of Bill C-264."

— Carol Anstey, Conservative natural resources critic

The bill's backers pointed to a Strathcona Resources plan to ship up to 250,000 barrels of oil a day by rail through Prince Rupert. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith backed repeal.
