A startup bets on AI-designed chips to ease the demand for computing power

Ricursive Intelligence founders Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini said on Wednesday their startup builds AI that designs chips, learns from each attempt and improves the next design.

Expected growth in demand for compute

10,000 times

Goldie said demand for computing could grow at least 10,000 times in five years, and that more efficient chips, not more data centres, should answer it.

AlphaChip, an AI system the founders built earlier, produced a donut-shaped arrangement of chip components that surprised engineers but proved successful.

“If you can design a chip in like a week … you can design custom chips for all sorts of different types of applications.”
