Waymo taps Toyota for robotaxis in Japan and the UK

Toyota will build 2027 bZ4X electric vehicles and fit them with Waymo's self-driving system at its Takaoka factory in Japan. Testing starts in Japan next year.

What's next

Waymo intends to run a robotaxi service in Japan and to deploy the vehicles in other right-hand-drive countries, including the U.K. It is also testing in London and plans to launch there once it has the permits.

The two companies will keep looking at bringing Waymo's technology to Toyota vehicles that people own. The deal comes 18 months after a preliminary agreement.
