Russia orders Apple to store and hand over users' messages

What changed

According to reports, Apple and Microsoft were added on Oct 2 to a Russian registry of information-dissemination organizers. The registry is run by the state media regulator, Roskomnadzor.

Russian law now requires them to keep users' text, video and audio messages for up to three years on servers in Russia. The data must go to security services on request, without a legal process.

Neither company has commented publicly. WhatsApp and Telegram are already on the registry.
