Researchers say permanent standard time is a better choice than permanent daylight time
“When you want to change to permanent time, it should be permanent standard time.”
— Kai-Florian Storch, McGill University psychiatry professor
Winter sunrise on daylight time
- Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg: 9 to 9:30 a.m.
- Edmonton: just before 10 a.m.
- The territories: after 11 a.m.
On year-round daylight time, winter sunrise in Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg comes between 9 and 9:30 a.m., and after 11 a.m. in the territories.
A later sunrise can upset the body’s biological clock, which helps regulate heart rate, metabolism and hormones, says sleep researcher Rebecca Robillard of the University of Ottawa.
And us?
Quebec’s premier said this week his government will end time changes and decide between the two options. Ontario has said it would drop the change if Manitoba, Quebec and New York did the same.
