Google will adopt a shared AI-training opt-out for websites

Google plans to support a new robots.txt signal in early 2027 that lets a website state its AI training preferences once for several AI companies. Bing, OpenAI and Anthropic have also said they plan to adopt it.

  • Final IETF standard still being worked out

The proposal comes from a working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force, the body that sets internet standards, and is still a draft.

A site that opts out of training with the shared token will be treated as if it had blocked Google-Extended, Google's existing control. Company-specific controls will keep working alongside it.
