Badlands of the Hell Creek Formation, Montana

Scientists describe a turkey-sized dinosaur that ate fruit

Hell Creek Formation

Montana and North Dakota

Named Infernogallus jamesi, or "hell chicken", it lived about 66 million years ago and was about 1.5 metres long. Its fossils were found in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana and North Dakota.

Three features of its jaws and beak point to a diet of fruit and soft plants. Lead author Greg Funston said living birds and turtles show them separately, but no living animal has all three.

"The discovery of Infernogallus shows that dinosaurs' diet was probably much more varied than we thought."
