Diet and exercise put young adults' type 2 diabetes into remission in trial

After 24 weeks, 27 of 50 people on the program were in remission, against two of 46 receiving standard care.
The program combined 800 to 900 calories a day with supervised aerobic and resistance exercise. The trial enrolled 96 adults aged 18 to 45 with early-onset type 2 diabetes and obesity.
And us?
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal and the University of Alberta in Edmonton ran trial sites, and 56 of the 96 participants were in Canada.
What we know
- 54% in remission after 24 weeks
- No severe adverse events reported
Not yet
- Whether remission lasts
- Long-term weight and muscle effects
Most people on the diet had milder side effects such as constipation, headaches and fatigue. The researchers say longer studies are needed to show whether remission lasts.
