AI helps make the Linux 7.4 merge window the largest in kernel history

Commits in the merge window

19,671 commits

The Linux 7.4 merge window drew 19,671 commits, the most on record, up from 16,267 for Linux 7.3.

Kernel maintainers are overwhelmed by AI-generated bug reports and fixes, which are pushing commit activity higher, according to reports.

Large, and full of fixes for issues found by AI (and more and more the patches have been suggested by AI too, although they often get rewritten).

Background

Torvalds also said 7.4 is expected to be the next long-term support release, another reason some releases are larger than others.
