Germany warns lawmakers their iPhones may have been hacked with spyware

Germany's federal cybersecurity office, the BSI, says members of the Bundestag and other notable people received Apple warnings that they may have been targeted. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Berlin is taking the warning very seriously.

How the spyware gets in

zero-click exploit

This kind of spyware often relies on zero-click exploits, which hack a phone without the victim clicking a link or opening a file. It can steal messages, location data and other sensitive information.

Countries where users were warned

99 countries

Apple's latest batch of threat notifications went to users in 99 countries. Apple does not say which government is behind an attack, and it is unclear who carried this one out.

If Apple warns you

Anyone who receives an Apple threat notification should assume their device may have been compromised, the BSI says.
