UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara ends after 35 years

The Security Council failed to renew the mission's mandate. Russia vetoed a US-backed resolution, then a competing Russian draft was defeated.

Morocco welcomed the end of the mission; the Polisario Front said it was concerned. The mission, in place since a 1991 ceasefire, was also meant to organize a referendum that never took place.
