Anthropic signs on as tenant of a planned Cape Breton data centre

Point Tupper

Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

The San Francisco AI company signed a 20-year lease for space and power at EverWind's planned site in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. It says the facility will run its Claude models for Canadian and global customers.

Private investment in the data centre campus

8+ $ billion

EverWind says the campus involves more than $8 billion in private investment and $2 billion for onshore wind projects, the province's largest private investment ever.

Late 2027

95 megawatts

Possible in 2028

420 megawatts

The first 95-megawatt facility is set to open in late 2027, and an expansion could bring it to 420 megawatts in 2028. The wind farms will not be ready at first, so it will rely on the existing grid.

And us?

Anthropic promised to pay for grid upgrades, shield existing customers from related price increases and give tens of millions of dollars to community priorities. Provincial NDP Leader Claudia Chender questioned how those promises would be enforced.

What's next

A First Nation consortium led by Membertou Development Corporation is negotiating an ownership stake in the campus.
