CERN and Mistral AI team up to build an AI model for particle physics

What's new

The European physics lab and the Paris-based AI company announced a long-term partnership to build a foundation model for scientific discovery, called Flare.

A large model trained on collisions, not text

Large Physics Model

CERN says Flare will be the first foundation model for collider physics, trained on billions of simulated particle collisions instead of text. It is meant to replace some of the specialized algorithms that reconstruct and identify particles.

Data from the Large Hadron Collider

1 exabyte

CERN holds one exabyte of data from the Large Hadron Collider, about a million terabytes, and expects collision volumes to grow tenfold after an upgrade under way.

What we know

  • A long-term partnership
  • Trained on simulated collisions

  • Timeline
  • Budget

No timeline or budget was announced. Both sides say the models could later be used in other fields of science.
