Albertans reject separation, and Smith rules out another referendum

Voted for Alberta to stay in Canada

75 %

About 75 per cent of ballots counted on the separation question were for Alberta staying in Canada, on a turnout of roughly 62 per cent of the province's 3.1 million eligible voters.

Only two of Alberta's 87 electoral divisions, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre and Central Peace-Notley, voted for a separation referendum, each with 51 per cent. Edmonton and Calgary voted about 86 and 83 per cent to stay.

Premier Danielle Smith said in a televised speech: “For as long as I am premier, I will honour this mandate from Albertans and will not be holding another referendum on this issue.”

Separatist figure Jeffrey Rath said he will push for a special general meeting of the United Conservative Party to remove Smith as leader.

And us?

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the vote a “great result for Canada” and said he and Smith discussed moving forward in the spirit of co-operative federalism, including on immigration.
