Ordered by the judge

US$25 billion

Judge Francis Mathew found a penalty of more than US$219 billion was warranted under state law, then reduced it to US$25 billion.

"Facebook's wrongdoing — over the course of years and systematically broadcast to the public — goes to the heart of Facebook's core business practices."

— Judge Francis Mathew

It is the largest penalty against Meta since the scandal, after a US$5 billion fine from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in 2019. Meta's chief legal officer said the company is confident it will win on appeal.
