Airbnb bans hosts from making guests do dishes and take out the trash

Airbnb bookings worldwide

New Airbnb rules limit what hosts may ask of guests, who already pay a cleaning fee. They apply to reservations booked on or after Nov 20.

Chores hosts can no longer require

• Stripping the bed
• Washing and putting away dishes
• Starting laundry
• Taking trash off the property

Hosts can no longer require guests to strip the bed, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or take the trash off the property.

Hosts may still ask guests to limit showers during drought restrictions or to use bear-proof trash bins where wildlife is a risk. They cannot impose fines.

Guests have long complained about chores on top of a cleaning fee, while some hosts say basic cleaning keeps their homes sanitary. One host wrote the change could lead them to leave the platform.
