A bug makes some Google Home speakers download hundreds of gigabytes of data
Used in a day by one owner's speaker, at least
200 GB
Owners report speakers that download data nonstop in the background, one of them more than 200 GB a day.
What we know
- Most reports involve the new Google Home Speaker
- A failed firmware update may be the cause
Not yet
- How many speakers are affected
The speakers may be failing to download and install a firmware update correctly. Most reports concern the new Google Home Speaker model, and it is not clear how many devices are affected.
Unaffected speaker
2 GB in a month
Affected speaker
132 GB in a month
One unaffected speaker used 2 GB of data in a month, against 132 GB for an affected one over the same period.
A fix is already rolling out that should address this for users.
On a capped plan
Owners on a limited data plan can check how much data their devices use, since the bug can eat through a monthly allowance without warning.
