Bill Gates says to prepare for 20 years of ‘tumultuous’ AI disruption
“My big concern is this 20-year transition period, where they’ll have winners and losers and a lot of disruption.”
— Bill Gates
Gates says that with many companies competing at the frontier, responsibility falls to governments, and he called it stunning that there is no mandatory review of AI models.
Risks Gates points to
- Cyberattacks
- Bioterrorism
- Disruption to the job market
- Effects on social relationships
He says the biggest near-term danger comes from models stripped of their safeguards, and also points to the job market and social relationships.
The upside
Gates also expects AI to speed up drug discovery and health care, and says his foundation is using it in its work on tuberculosis, HIV and malaria.
