Illustration of a glowing particle held by field lines in a vacuum

Physicists trap a single antimatter particle for a month

The particle is a positron, the antimatter twin of the electron. A team at Northwestern University held it in a trap cooled to about 0.3 °C above absolute zero.

Word to know

Positron

A positron has the same mass as an electron but the opposite charge, and it is annihilated when it meets matter.

Why it matters

The team plans to compare the positron's magnetic moment with the electron's. A difference could help explain why the universe is made of matter rather than antimatter.
