Miller says no timeline yet for a new digital safety regulator
The culture minister says Ottawa is moving as fast as it can on Bill C-34, which includes a social media ban for kids, but he cannot give a date. Officials had said setting up the regulator would take 18 months.
“
“Eighteen months in Ottawa is like three years.”
— Alex Munter, Canadian Medical Association
What the regulator could do
- Issue binding orders
- Levy fines
- Judge age-verification methods
The Digital Safety and Data Protection Commission of Canada would have five members appointed by cabinet.
What's next
Introduced in June, Bill C-34 is awaiting second reading. Miller says he is open to changes, including on games with social-media-like features.
