Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced federal aid for projects at four Rio Tinto sites in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Alouette smelter in Sept-Îles. The projects total nearly $955 million in investment.

Joly says Canada must complete its aluminum chain so metal is no longer processed mostly in the U.S. and sold back at a higher price. Ottawa is ready to offer financing and equity, and supply contracts tied to defence.

U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent apply to Canadian aluminum, and Canada has charged 50 per cent on processed U.S. aluminum since Sep 8. Aluminum that goes south and comes back is hit twice.
