A lawyer seeks to block the start of Quebec's session over the King's oath

All members of the National Assembly have refused to swear the oath to the King, for the first time in Quebec's history. Lawyer Lawrence David says he will try to block the start of parliamentary work.

Background

Since 2022 a Quebec law has made the oath optional, though the Constitution of 1867 requires it. David calls the law unconstitutional and has asked the Superior Court for an injunction to suspend it.

David says a Superior Court decision is expected by Nov 24, and that the sitting was postponed from Nov 17 to allow for it. A ruling on the merits could take years.
