Cuba asks Canada to keep voting against the U.S. embargo

The United Nations votes next week on Cuba's yearly motion to end the U.S. embargo, which Canada has backed several times. Global Affairs Canada says it is still considering how to vote.

"The blockade and this intensification is, in practice, killing people."

— Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, Cuba's ambassador to Canada

Washington says Cuba is a national security threat and has pressed it through a de facto oil blockade since January. The U.S. ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, urged countries to vote against the motion.

And us?

Air Canada and other airlines cancelled flights to Cuba in February over fuel shortages. Ottawa has pledged $13 million in humanitarian aid for Cubans through international organizations.
