P.E.I.'s Province House reopens after nearly 12 years of restoration
Province House in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, officially reopened on Saturday. It first opened for a legislative session in 1847, making it the second-oldest legislature in Canada.
Background
The building is best known as the site of the September 1864 negotiations that led to the founding of Canada three years later.
A February 2014 engineering report found the foundation was crumbling and part of the building could collapse. The building closed in 2015 and the legislature moved to the George Coles Building.
What slowed the work
- COVID-19 pandemic
- Supply-chain issues
- Inflated material costs
- Shortage of skilled tradespeople
The work ran into delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, supply-chain issues, inflated material costs and a shortage of skilled tradespeople.
