P.E.I. students face tuition hikes more than double the national average

Tuition increase

4.9 P.E.I. (%) 2.4 Canada (%)

Statistics Canada says tuition in Prince Edward Island rose 4.9 per cent this school year, against 2.4 per cent nationally. The province also had the highest inflation rate in September, at 5.7 per cent.

The student union says students have faced three straight years of steep hikes, with back-to-back increases of up to 6.5 per cent for domestic students. It fears low- and middle-income families will be discouraged.

And us?

The University of Prince Edward Island cites a difficult financial climate and falling international enrolment. Atlantic universities report that enrolment is down nearly 48 per cent since federal restrictions began in 2024.

What students want

The union wants students to know at enrolment what they will pay throughout their studies. It also wants Ottawa to find a solution suited to Atlantic Canada.
