Sgt. Morgan Wong is laid to rest in Edmonton after the CFB Wainwright fire

Family, friends and soldiers filled an Edmonton funeral home on Sunday. Eight soldiers carried his flag-draped casket to the sound of bagpipes, and Buddhist rites followed.

Wong was 26, a reservist with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. His sister Megan said he joined the military at 17 and was deployed to Latvia in 2024, where he met his wife.

“We lost a leader, a mentor, a friend and, for many of you, much more.”

— Lt.-Col. Bryn Wright, regiment commander
